THE LADY OF THE SEA

by

Laura Christian

This poem was inspired by the book I think is titled, "The Island of the Blue Dolphin." I've never read the book, but someone told me the story which is a true story. I made a chorus to it, because I wanted to make it a song. I'll start out with the chorus.

CHORUS

The lady of the sea, the lady of the island
The lady all alone with no one to take her hand
She's looking, always looking at the far horizon
For him who'd promised to return when his work was done

The lady of the sea, the lady of the island
The lady all alone with no one to take her hand
The island to herself, the smallest life her friend
Counting off the months and days when her prison term will end

Years and years have past, her dearest one is dead
The one for which she gave her life, "I'll never leave" she'd said
But now all hope is gone, she's even lost her song
Nothing ever changes, this has been too long

CHORUS

The water ripples still nothing ever fills
This empty longing in her soul she has no choice or will

She had a dog she found among the wolves
He was the leader of pack she did intend to kill
Although she wounded him near death her mercy kept him from all harm
And now her only comfort snuggled warm beneath her arm

Alone she was forgotten, 21 years forlorn
From age 12 to 33, her precious young life was worn

CHORUS

Finally one day a ship was seen
Could it be or was it a dream?
I'm sure it's true. I'm sure it is
From her eyes tears of joy streamed

She wore a pretty feathered skirt she'd saved for many a year
To show she'd like to marry and threw away all fears

But the sailors of the ship thought her costume much too airy
Didn't understand the custom meant that she'd like to marry

So they covered up her shame thought they, but really broke a soul that day
A soul who'd longed for a human face and thought she was giving her very best.

CHORUS

When she asked of loved ones dear she found they all were gone
Buried underneath the sea their ship had never met the dawn.

Would she ever start again find a brand new life
Maybe find a man that wanted her as wife?

No says she I cannot bear
The loss I've felt how could I dare

So off the island with her dog still her solitary friend
The lovely lady of the sea all her love does send

CHORUS

The lady of the sea, the lady of the island
The lady all alone with no one to take her hand
She's looking, always looking at the far horizon
For him who'd promised to return when his work was done
